Khanmigo

Tutor learners by asking guiding questions and releasing graduated hints so they reach the answer themselves rather than receiving it directly.
Description. Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor for learners. Instead of giving the answer, it walks the learner through a problem by asking questions so they work it out themselves. It releases help gradually rather than producing a direct solution. The tool was built by Khan Academy on GPT-4 and launched as a pilot in 2023. A moderation layer screens conversations and alerts a parent or teacher when content is flagged.
Agent loop shape. When a learner is stuck, Khanmigo does not return the answer; it asks a sequence of questions and offers step-by-step hints, walking the learner through the solution so they arrive at the answer themselves. In parallel, a moderation layer screens the conversation and, when it detects inappropriate or unsafe content, flags the exchange and alerts a connected adult.
Primary use cases
- guiding students through problems with questions
- withholding direct answers during tutoring
- supporting self-directed learning across subjects
- alerting an adult when a conversation is flagged by moderation
Key concepts
- Tutor mode → hint-ladder (docs) — The default tutoring behaviour in which Khanmigo refuses to hand over the answer and instead questions the learner and releases graduated hints so they reach the solution themselves.
- Writing coach (docs) — A named activity where Khanmigo gives real-time feedback on a learner's writing and supports debate and collaboration instead of producing the text for them.
- Moderation alerts → mandatory-red-flag-escalation (docs) — A screening layer over conversations that detects inappropriate or unsafe content and notifies a connected parent or teacher, who can also view the chat history.
Patterns this app implements —
- ★Hint Ladder
Khanmigo's tutor deliberately withholds the direct answer and instead walks the learner through the solution with questions and step-by-step hints until they work it out themselves.
- ★Socratic Questioning Agent
Khanmigo drives the learner toward the answer by asking a sequence of questions rather than supplying the solution, surfacing the learner's own reasoning.
- ★★Input/Output Guardrails
A moderation layer screens conversations for inappropriate or unsafe content as the learner interacts, so the tutoring exchange runs under monitoring rather than unsupervised free chat.
- ★★Mandatory Red-Flag Escalation
When the moderation layer flags content in a conversation, Khanmigo escalates by alerting the connected parent or teacher rather than handling it inside the chat, putting an adult in the loop on conc…
