Khanmigo

Tutor learners by asking guiding questions and releasing graduated hints so they reach the answer themselves rather than receiving it directly.

Description

Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor for learners. Instead of giving the answer, it walks the learner through a problem by asking questions so they work it out themselves. It releases help gradually rather than producing a direct solution. The tool was built by Khan Academy on GPT-4 and launched as a pilot in 2023. A moderation layer screens conversations and alerts a parent or teacher when content is flagged.

Solution

When a learner is stuck, Khanmigo does not return the answer; it asks a sequence of questions and offers step-by-step hints, walking the learner through the solution so they arrive at the answer themselves. In parallel, a moderation layer screens the conversation and, when it detects inappropriate or unsafe content, flags the exchange and alerts a connected adult.

Primary use cases

  • guiding students through problems with questions
  • withholding direct answers during tutoring
  • supporting self-directed learning across subjects
  • alerting an adult when a conversation is flagged by moderation
