Vendor Cert Ladder

also known as cloud AI certification path, foundational AI cert, AI practitioner certification, AI badge track

A learner follows a structured, vendor-provided certification ladder from zero AI knowledge to a credentialled, verifiable proof of literacy. The external credential signals readiness to employers and creates a shared vocabulary within teams. The six major AI platforms — Google, Microsoft, AWS, IBM, Anthropic, OpenAI — each offer a foundational certificate requiring no technical prerequisites. These certs range from free (IBM, Anthropic) to under $150 (AWS, Microsoft), take two to eight hours of self-paced work, and produce a verifiable badge. The Vendor Cert Ladder move treats these as stackable: the learner starts with one, earns the badge, and can advance to deeper tracks on the same platform or cross to another platform's offering.

How the learner advances

Intent. Give an individual learner a structured, externally credentialled path from zero AI knowledge to a verifiable proof of operator-level literacy.

When to apply. Apply this move when an individual learner wants structured guidance rather than self-directed exploration, needs an externally verifiable credential for employment or progression, or when an organisation wants a vendor-neutral way to set a literacy bar without building their own course. Also apply when EU AI Act Article 4 documentation is required and an organisation chooses recognised vendor certs as the evidence base.

Threshold — earns the next step. The learner holds a verifiable badge from a recognised AI foundational certification and can apply at least one technique from the cert to a real task in their current role within one week of completing the assessment.

Masterpiece — the artifact that proves it. A verifiable, publicly-linkable digital badge or certificate from a recognised AI provider, earned through assessment, tied to the learner's professional identity — demonstrating to employers, clients, or regulators that a defined AI literacy standard has been met.

Inputs

  • Learner at zero or low AI literacyAn individual who has little or no prior AI experience and wants structured learning toward a credential — no technical background required for foundational tier certs.
  • Selected foundational certOne cert from the ecosystem the learner works in or aspires to: Google AI Essentials, Microsoft AI-901, AWS AIF-C01, IBM AI Literacy, Anthropic AI Fluency, or OpenAI AI Foundations — each appropriate for non-technical learners.

Outputs

  • A more capable learnerA person who has completed structured AI literacy training and can use the certified platform's tools on real tasks, evaluate AI outputs critically, and apply responsible-use principles in their work.
  • Verifiable digital badge or certificateAn externally issued, publicly linkable credential tied to the learner's identity — the Masterpiece — demonstrating that a defined literacy standard has been met and providing evidence for employers or regulatory compliance.

Steps (4)

  1. Select the right cert for the ecosystem

Match the cert to where the learner will use AI: Google AI Essentials for Workspace users; Microsoft AI-901 for M365 or Azure environments; AWS AIF-C01 for cloud-first businesses; IBM SkillsBuild for platform-neutral literacy; Anthropic AI Fluency for Claude users; OpenAI AI Foundations for ChatGPT users. The worked examples in each cert are platform-specific; the right choice produces higher relevance and lower study time.

  2. Complete self-paced modules

Work through each module in the selected cert. All foundational certs cover: what AI and generative AI are, how to prompt effectively, how to evaluate output quality, and how to use AI responsibly. Target two to eight hours depending on the cert chosen.

  3. Pass the assessment and earn the badge

Complete the proctored or auto-graded assessment. For AWS and Microsoft, this is a separate exam booking. For Google, IBM, Anthropic, and OpenAI, assessment is embedded in the course. Pass and claim the verifiable digital badge via Credly, Google Certificates, or equivalent.

  4. Apply the certified skills on a real task

Within a week of earning the badge, complete one real work task using the AI tools covered in the cert. The badge is evidence of literacy; the real task is the proof of transfer. If no real task emerges, the cert was the wrong one for the learner's job context.

Principles

  • Match cert to ecosystem — a well-chosen cert takes half the study time of a mis-matched one and transfers twice as well.
  • The badge is evidence of literacy, not proof of skill — the real task after the cert is what closes the loop.
  • Stack from foundational to specialised — the Vendor Cert Ladder is a path, not a single step.
